Other Skills and Resources - Overview
Taekwon-Do is not just about fighting and performing the 24 patterns. It’s also learning about ourselves and how much more we are capable of. It’s an education about life and how to enhance our life experiences.
As we do drills for our foundational blocks, strikes, kicks, and stances, we are slowly mastering our skills. What started as something challenging to learn becomes easier through consistent practice and demonstration. And as we become more competent in executing a block, a strike, or a kick, Taekwon-Do becomes more gratifying.
Now, we’re on the path of mastery. The path is available to anyone – regardless of age, sex, or previous experience – willing to get on it and stay on it. We began our journey to mastery when we decided to learn Taekwon-do, join The Villages dojang, and commit to consistent practice.
Taekwon-Do is a perfect way to learn about and gain mastery because mind, muscle, and spirit come together in fluid and purposeful movements through time and space. The physicality of Taekwon-Do helps us stay on the path by allowing us to see and feel our physical improvements quickly in the beginning.
Yet, we also need to understand that there will be (long) periods when we are on a plateau. Plateaus aren’t for the impatient. Being on a plateau is part of the mastery journey and challenge.
Time spent on the plateau is good because this is when our bodies, minds, and the various components of Taekwon-Do come together. As we approach the plateau’s end, our muscles know what to do, and we don’t have to think about it. We’ve mastered one of the skills. We’re ready to learn the next pattern, a new kick, or a more advanced technique. The mastery process starts again but at a higher level.
To help us become a more proficient Taekwon-Do martial artist, General Choi studied the theory of power and incorporated it into the Taekwon-Do techniques and applications. He stated that anyone, regardless of age, sex, or size, who strives to use 100 percent of their potential can learn the power of Taekwon-Do. Thus, the effects of Taekwon-Do training can be achieving a higher level of reaction force, focus, balance, breath control, and speed. These factors contribute to our better physical and mental power and fitness.
The Art of Taekwon-Do also has an underlying philosophy of “developing and enhancing the emotional, perceptual, and psychological characteristics” of the student, which helps him or her travel life’s path with courage and tenacity. Every movement of Taekwon-Do is scientifically designed with a specific purpose. Constant repetition (drills, one-steps, the forms, and sparring) teaches patience and resolve to overcome any difficulty. As we improve our skills, we learn that success is possible for us seniors.
