Other Skills: Self-Defense Techniques

According to Gen. Choi, self-defense techniques are the most interesting and advanced in Taekwon-Do.  They were developed to be practical and useable in everyday life if a TKD student ever faced a situation where he or she was suddenly attacked.

These self-defense techniques apply the various motions we perform in our patterns, sparring, and fundamental movements practices.

We, as defenders, must know how to use our opponent's momentum and force to our advantage while using our reflexive, dynamic actions against the attacker.  Our actions will become reflexive by continuous training and practice.  We can do this during our training at the Dojang by simulating realistic attacks with fellow students.  By memorizing how to perform these techniques (and perfecting them), we'll be able to quickly respond to the attack with force and create the ability to escape from the assailant.
